History Resource Guide

UNDER CONSTRUCTION/DEVELOPING IN CHUNKS

Where to find old photographs of St. Louis

What follows is simply a quick and handy list of links for where you can find historical photos of St. Louis online. It is by no means exhaustive and new sources will be added as I become aware of them. Additionally not every photograph collection has the same copyright/reuse policies, make sure to do due diligence in sourcing images from area repositories and provide credit (a source) wherever possible!

Missouri Historical Society

State Historical Society of Missouri- St. Louis

St. Louis Public Library

Missouri Botanical Garden

University of Missouri- St. Louis

St. Louis University Archives

The Library of Congress (Historic American Building Survey)

The National Building Arts Center

Going forward this page will become, if my plans come together, sort of a cheat sheet for doing historical research in St. Louis on a range of topics. Some of this will be in blog form while other times I may choose to just do as I did above, and share a list of links to get you started on your journey of historical discovery. For expanded discussions of different resources including photograph collections, manuscript collections and oral histories, make sure to stay abreast with what I post on my substack as I plan on sprinkling it with more a touch of historical research in addition to its already heavy focus on my history based artwork.
